Indoor Play Area Design

About client

Run by the Lake District National Park, Brockhole is a not-for-profit centre based just outside of Windermere and is a visitor attraction for all of the family.

Project

Brockhole Play and Learn

bwd tendered and successfully won the project to turn a redundant space at Brockhole (used occasionally by community groups), into an indoor Soft Play space for 2 > 12 year olds.

What we delivered

bwd designed, organised the manufactured and implementation of all of the elements for the Play and Learn space all within a six-week timeframe.  The re-designed space has three key areas.  Area 1, called ‘the lakes’ where the classroom-style learning and desk-based activities could happen. Area 2 called ‘the woods’ where we positioned a traversing wall to entertain older more physically abled children to let off steam. The final area we called ‘the hills’ and is a soft play space with a bridge, sit-on animals and a walled walk, for little ones to enjoy.

bwd commissioned a mural artist to bring the three areas together.  The original artwork showcases the variety of plants and animals found in the area and is aimed at visiting school teachers and school children.  That said, during non-term-time, the room is enjoyed by children and parents who used the space to enjoy time together as well as exploring the local landscape, nature and farming captured in the unique mural art around the walls.
