Grasmere Gingerbread Shop

Client

Victorian cook Sarah Nelson invented Grasmere Gingerbread in 1854. It is now run by third-generation owners Joanne and Andrew Hunter. The gingerbread is baked fresh daily and retails online as well as from their tiny shop in Grasmere in the Lake District.

The Project

Joanne and Andrew invited BWD to redesign and refit of their tiny shop. The brief was to maintain its traditional roots and only use traditional materials and finishes. Given the size of the shop and space available to retail their products, the focus was on maximising sales space whilst balancing the need to retain the shop’s traditional shop appearance.

Outcomes

The shop has been completely refurbished, and the new service counter has been designed to showcase the gingerbread and the other Cumbrian-based products that visitors know and love. The surfaces of the counter have been designed to avoid crumb traps and the rear counter areas now cater for more back-up stock.

As the shop refurbishment was delivered during the pandemic, there is a bespoke Covid screen that has been carefully integrated. Not only is the screen functional but has been designed to tie-in with the traditional counter design.
