The Client

Chester Visitor Information Centre is the city’s official visitor hub, located within the historic Victorian Town Hall overlooking Town Hall Square in the heart of Chester. Welcoming thousands of visitors each year, the centre provides maps, local information, attraction tickets, walking tour bookings and a carefully curated range of Chester-themed gifts and souvenirs.

As the first stop for many visitors exploring the city, the space plays a vital role in shaping first impressions of Chester and helping people make the most of their visit.

The Project

BWD was commissioned to modernise the Visitor Information Centre’s interior while respecting the architectural character and heritage significance of its Town Hall setting.

The existing environment needed to better reflect Chester’s status as one of the UK’s most historic and popular visitor destinations, while creating a more engaging and flexible space for visitors seeking information, purchasing tickets and browsing retail products.

The briefing requirements included:

  • Refreshing the customer experience while preserving the building’s heritage features.
  • Improving the retail display of maps, gifts and souvenirs.
  • Enhancing visitor flow and accessibility throughout the space.
  • Creating a more welcoming environment for visitors arriving in the city.
  • Introducing a contemporary visual identity that complemented the historic surroundings.
  • Providing greater flexibility for information displays, promotions and seasonal events.

The Solution

Our design approach focused on carefully balancing heritage and modernity, creating an interior that celebrates the character of the Victorian Town Hall while delivering a contemporary visitor experience.

We reimagined the layout to provide a clearer and more intuitive customer journey, helping visitors quickly access information, maps, attraction tickets and guided tour bookings. Retail displays were introduced to improve product visibility and create a more engaging shopping experience, while new flexible merchandising solutions allow the team to showcase seasonal events, exhibitions and local promotions throughout the year.

Throughout the scheme, materials, finishes and design details were selected to complement the historic architecture of the building, ensuring the new interior felt entirely at home within its prestigious civic setting.
